Dear Jim,
I want to thank you for your efforts in planning and organizing the Israel trip. You and Joe composed a masterpiece! I am so touched by the experience and I am forever changed. Joe’s knowledge and sensitivity were evident in everything he said and did. His love of Israel was demonstrated continuously.
I also appreciate Joe’s attention to each of us as we traveled around the country. We all got along very well and I feel it was Joe’s efforts that created a cohesive group.
I can only imagine the work it took on your part to create such a tremendous experience. I am not negating your efforts by signing Joe’s praises. I know it took a lot of effort for both of you. Joe worked very hard to have everything organized and for us to keep moving in a timely manner.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your work putting this trip together. This is my first trip abroad and I cannot think of a better place too begin such an emotional and exciting experience.
Thank you again!
With warm regards,
Donna Young

I’ve already been back home for a week and I’m still glowing in the aftermath of the Romania trip!
It was such an amazing trip with lots of great events and experiences. I can’t tell you enough how much I’ve enjoyed it all. Thank you for the many things you have done to prepare and for everything you do during the trip and behind the scenes to make it such a huge success. You have an amazing way with people and know how to deal with so many variables and situations!
The group dynamics is so important to a trip such as this – we all come into this trip with our “baggage” and somehow we all leave as good friends – you play an important role in this.
I have not gone through all the dances yet because every dance has made me curious to read more and/or to see you demonstrate it on YouTube. I’m not sure I’ll be able to give you much feedback, I just think it is a wonderful collection that will delight many folk dancers.
Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!
Marjolein
I can’t thank you enough for having collected these videos and send them out. It makes the memory of this wonderful event so much more vivid.
I wish you a lot of continued success doing these tours.
All the best

Thank you so much for sending this wonderful article! How are things with you? Have you even begun to process the many many layered lessons of our Romania trip? It will take me years, easily. I’m so appreciative of your efforts to put this transformative trip together. It was the trip of a lifetime for me. I’m truly just beginning to process it, and I feel so fortunate. Hope to see you in Princeton sometime. Be well.

Regina and I had a wonderful time. I am going to order Henry’s proto-billy cd set, and would like to get some of Nancy’s recordings. Can you send me all the email addresses and phone numbers that you can. The people on the tour were great. If we visit some place, I would like to be able to contact them.
Also I would like to get the recordings and video links, if you have them, of some dances you did like La Bordeiul Cel din Vale, Chicken Kolo (very cute), and the dance you choreographed La Kreayson.
Thanks, It’s 5AM and can’t sleep
Bob
Soooo wonderful… lovely memories of the great high moments.
Thanks.
Louise
Hi Jim,
I so appreciated your sending this article from the Times of Israel. It’s very well put together, and made your trip really come alive for me. I especially appreciated the climatic anecdote about breaking into song (Alunelel) and dancing in the Palace Parliament. Our wonderful Louise came back simply glowing. I am sure you made a special connection with her while together on the trip; she is very special to all of us here in Sidney and Victoria.
Our Buenos Aires stop last spring has sent my life off on the tango path. I simply love it and am dancing at least 3 times a week in those high strappy heels that the women wear. Can you imagine it! You never know what effect one of your trips is going to have, as you’ve often said.
Big hugs,
Linda

Hi, Jim,
Thank you for the wonderful videos. I have looked at half of them so far and I really
am glad to have them. I am headed out for a week of camping and then I will watch the
rest when I get home.
Thanks, too, for an amazing trip. The people, the sites, the dancing and singing were
all terrific. The memories will last forever!
Take care!

Dear Jim:
As Ray and I are sitting at the airport in Sofia, Bulgaria, we want to take time to thank you and your team for a wonderful two-week Balkan Adventure. You often give recognition to others, but first and foremost, credit for the vision and success of this trip goes to you and your years of experience, knowledge and caring!
The trip was a wonderful blend of learning about the countries we visited, visiting historical and natural sites, interacting with people in the area, and experiencing international folk dance and folk lore. We visited some amazing sites that we would never have known about. You provided many opportunities for us to attend performances of Balkan song and dance, from performances at restaurants to our own private demonstrations of wonderful dancers in their own cities. We also had some unexpected times, too, like vising the studio of Bardhi Pojani in Albania and dancing with him!
Our traveling companions of Lee Otterholt, with his years of experience, Bulgarian dance instructor and drummer, Niki Enchev, and our gaida player, Ventsi Andonov, all did fantastic jobs and were so much fun. The instructors from Greece and Macedonia that you arranged were also great.
Stefan Gendjov, our main guide, was a wealth of knowledge – of the history of the countries and of the various sites we visited. Thanks also to our special guide in Macedonia and those we had at various stops.
We were overwhelmed by the competence and hard work of the tour manager, Ventsi Milev. We traveled through and to five countries and many miles. He had all the details for hotels, restaurants, and travel stops down to a tee. And when needed, “Plan B” was executed smoothly. And he was so kind and watched out for each traveler. Though he is a young man, he was like a mother hen, taking care of us!! Ventsi arranged for the lovely bus and the super-competent driver, Mario, who transported us comfortably and safely, even on some tricky roads.
The highlight of the trip for me was our “picnic lunch” on the banks of the Danube. The many dishes were prepared by women of the nearby village, served on lovely tableware on tables and benches just steps from the famous river. Ray very much enjoyed the unique rock formations in Belogradchik, Bulgaria and the nearby Magurata Cave with prehistoric wall paintings.
The hotels were great-some beyond amazing. (I call the Grand Hotel Sofia a six star hotel!!) The food you provided was a great variety of Balkan food. The only complaint may be the pounds we likely gained! Each restaurant had a wonderful ambiance, with open air seating at many.
You may not want to take any credit for picking our fellow travelers who also made the journey extra special. However, many had been on previous trips with you and/or dance with you regularly on the East coast. Return travelers and those who know you speak to the quality of the tour and the excellence of the tour provider. We have seen advertisements for your tours for many years and are so glad that we finally took the leap and joined one of them.
Ray and I hope to see you again! If you come to Richland, Washington we will be happy to show you and your wife around our lovely state. Ray can take you out on the Columbia River in our boat and end the day with fish he has caught and cooked. And, maybe you will even get to dance with the International Folk Dancers of Richland!
Thanks again to you, your staff, others you introduced to us, and other tour participants. We also appreciate all of the people living, and those who came before, who built and maintain the wonderful countries of Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia, Albania and Greece. The land, its history, music, dance, and people were a wonderful gift to us this summer!!
Sincerely,
Barb
Dear Jim.
We didn’t get in till after midnight Sunday and now are seeing to cars which won’t start, telephones which won’t work, etc. etc. but soon the golden moments of the Balkan trip will emerge and subsume everything else. Thank you for planning such a memorable trip. Be well.
Sandy
Dear Jim,
“Here is my take on your two-week Balkan Adventure Tour that Yvonne and I took. This was an ambitious tour. Seven countries if you count Macedonia and Bulgaria twice. A lot of bus time between places but a lot to see and do in the two weeks.” Read more at: Balkan Adventure Tour 2018 Critique .

Dear Jim,
Well, I am so happy I came along on the blast through the Balkans! Such a wonderful time! I so need to review slowly our path that was at times jet-like through all that history, those tribes, those currencies! I will henceforth always try to have some Euros around no matter where I roam in that region. I’m also quite happy there was an amount of experimentation with the itinerary, and though I missed the dancing that had to be cancelled, I have total faith that everything gets tweaked as you go along in these adventures. I surely hope I’ll be back!
Mary Lou
Dear Jim,
One more terrific Balkan trip w/ you and Jim….& terrific guide Stefan.
The first story I tell friends about this trip….is that amazing first evening ….going outside for a walk after dinner and coincidently stumbling on 100 Bulgarians dancing in a Sofia town square…..and many of us …. ..simply joining them. How rare and wonderful is that? People tell me…..they get chills when I tell that story…..It’s too good to be true!
Until next time,
Lois

Dear Jim,
What an extraordinary trip we all experienced together! We have been dazzling and regaling family and friends with details, stories, and photos of it since our return. Each of you added your own special je ne sais quoi to make it as wonderful, unique, joyful, and as fun as it was.
Milos, we learned so much from you. Thank you for sharing your info, insights, and reflections. Regards to your mother and aunt from all of us. Yes, visiting them and your ancestral country home certainly was a highlight of the trip. To Borko – you are an amazing driver on those challenging, dangerous roads. Thank you for keeping us safe.
And to you Jim, thanks so much for putting it all together, for rolling with the punches, and for your own brand of humor to keep it all in perspective.
Cheers!
Horst and Marcia Schran
Hi Jim,
So glad you got back safe and sound. A million thanks for the outstanding unique trip.
Since returning, I’ve used BLURB to put together a coffee table photo book. It should be back from the publisher next week. The photos helped me reignite the special moments we had. Others moments not captured on camera were:
1. Borko’s smile
2. Us sitting on the stage and being invited individually by the small children to join them in dance
3. Ha! And the look of Jim’s face when he found Marcy’s camera…I’m still giggling
4. Jane, earplugs in, bopping along in the bus
5. The very intense looks and words of our Sarajevo guide
6. The taste of those pears
7. The regular clinking of our glasses and calls of “shivoli”…or whatever that word was.
And, on and on.
Love to all,
Linda Sheridan
Dear Jim,
A special big thank you to YOU for being so positive & encouraging on the trip with regard to my knee handling the steep trails, wet stones and rocks, and the 500 steps up and down. I wasn’t sure how far I could go with it. Your encouragement helped, especially when you told me the hike up to the fort in Jajce was harder than the 500 steps up & down in Montenegro. Now it’s all a wonderful memory and I feel like I can do anything. No stopping me now!!!
Marcia
Dear Jim,
I absolutely agree: It was great group and a great tour. My mother and aunt said that you are now a Big Stars in our village. And they proudly use your bags every day. Very pleasef to meet all of you. Enjoy dancing and take care. See
you next time on one or the other side of the Atlantic ocean.

Dear Jim,
The trip as amazing….the best folk dancing trip, ever!
Memories and experiences keep flooding back with such warm feelings. I am still re-writing my notes as I put them into my journal, including pictures and postcards I collected. And a special thank to our wonderful guide Milos.
We all got so much!

Hi All!
I caught a cold on the last rung of the trip. However, it was well worth it: What a great trip!!! Good to meet you all. Hope we do it again. I’ve gotten my pictures into my computer, and worked on my “summary.” But lots to do before presenting to anyone. Hope to teach a couple of the dances, at least, to the Florida group. What fun learning them!

Hi Jim,
Thanks for sending the Shepard’s dance, I’m hoping to teach it here in Boulder/Denver.
And not least, thanks for a great trip! I think I managed to avoid gaining 5 pounds, due to the hiking we did in Wyoming this week, but it was a close call.

Dear Jim
So, first of all, it was a great trip, I was most impressed with the country and would even consider going back.
Some comments: An obvious was to reduce the meals. Also, not sure of the choices for hotels but we don’t need 4 star, 3 star is fine and often better, i.e. the hotel in Cluj-Napoca was the best we stayed in. It is an especial waste of money for 4 star when the schedule puts us there so late that we can do little more than shower and sleep. It is a big country and beautiful, hard to choose locations. The hot spell we hit wasn’t typical. I understand, however, traveling outside the high summer season has it’s advantages as well as some times excluding those in the education system. Overall it was a good trip, nice to have such a strong focus on dance.
Depending on the time and itinerary I would seriously consider joining you to Romania again.
Gail Getz
Hi Jim,
I am still thinking about this wonderful tour with amazing people. I saw some of the movies on your page. So good memories. I talked with my son about Crusaders Tours and he started reading it. I think Woody Allen’ s wisdom and humor has very much of your own deep and humorous and intensely humane perspective.

“Great” is not the word – it was out of this world!!!! I had such a wonderful time. It’s amazing how all aspects of the trip — people, dancing, sites, food, etc. — came together to create the memory of a lifetime. What a wonderful experience. Such a great group. Love all of you. I miss you. Its weird how you get used to being around a group of people. Last year, the group who went to Bulgaria made a closed facebook group that people joined. Its fun. A good way to post pictures (especially, ones of people on the trip that you wouldn’t put on your regular FB posts) and future events. Let me know if I should try to put one together.

Dear Jim,
Yesterday, under the pressure of 1/3 off the regular price of publishing a picture travel book of our trip, I finished up organizing, uploading pictures and writing descriptions. Through all of that process over the 7 days, I had opportunity to reflect upon the trip organization again and again. It was an amazing perfect blend of such a variety of activities. I really wanted to commend you, Kliti, and the travel agency for providing such a well balanced schedule that remained responsive to group needs. More specifically, I loved that:
1.The day of arrival we had half a day in Durres to unpack, wander around (aimlessly or purposefully) and change our money, or just enjoy the treat of laying flat on one’s back in silence, after the long journey.
2.We began the second day with a walking tour. Again, it was great for our bodies to walk before climbing on the bus.
3.We had 3 nights in Saranda with free time, as well.
4.The day we had a deluge of rain was one where we driving, rather than walking,…even if it did lead to detours. I know that you and Kliti really had to work hard to plan all that!
5.We did get into the nature a bit..in Burtrint, and on the boat excursion.
6.We had amazing and varied dance experiences, from excellent teaching, to wonderful performances, and lots of opportunities to join in with others.
For me the highlight of any trip are the connections that one makes with local people. The Albanians were so easy with eye contact, exchanging a smile, and, when possible, a few words. Truly this was an outstanding trip. Thanks,
Linda

Hi Jim
Great to hear from you. The tour in Armenia was fabulously wonderful!!! What an amazing country it is – the people, the food, the dancing, and Tineke and her guides. They were top notch! We had so much fun – Tineke is an amazing teacher and leader ( just as you said) and really delightful! Her manager and guide, Satik and Niara – excellent. We had very memorable experiences. Loved the dancing and hoping to remember them when I finally get home in another month. Thanks Jim for organizing such wonderful experiences.
Hugs,
Marcy
Dear Jim,
Armenia was great…a wonderful country with great people! Tineke was a great person to both teach and show us around.
Hedy
Jim,
Just wanted to let you know that the Armenia trip was excellent, beyond all expectations!
Tineke prepared a very good and well organized schedule, balancing dance classes with sightseeing excursions (with a wonderful guide and a safe driver)..
She arranged several very unique experiences (visit to small village she knows well, where we were entertained by local children dancing, we had a meal prepared by the local villagers, where we learned about the Armenia “toasting” traditions; observing a dance class in the local conservatory; seeing the national folk music/dance company perform; visiting the home of a dance teacher she knows–this included a tour of the old traditional house where he and his family lived in the past as well as a fantastic meal prepared by his wife and then a brief dance lesson. Tineke and her Armenian counterpart, Luidwig, are both excellent dance teachers. I am so happy to have CDs of all the dance music, plus were were all able to film each dance as performed by the teacher.
This is definitively a fascinating trip I would recommend to everyone!

Our tour guide Kliti was a source of knowledge and inspiration with a good sense of humour and Lee, as always, an amazing and skilled dance teacher. Lee’s son, Sebastian (7 years old) was a very cute addition. I have just finished downloading my pictures and will remember our wonderful trip by a click on the computer keyboard. Dear Jim,
Well, as you know, Jim, I think you have a very special way of dealing with life’s obstacles. Somehow or other you become this clear sparkling water that flows easily and makes all things possible. On our trips you set a very positive tone through example.
Personally I am very grateful for that tone, as I can easily get myself into a little whirlwind of worry…a specialty at which we women, not to be sexist or anything, seem to excel. I can only imagine how many minor explosions you have effectively dealt with in any one trip. I definitely remember my hysterical state on our first Turkey trip when I found my room was on top of some kind loud-speaker ceremony going on in the hotel. You managed to ask logical questions, look for answers, and even investigate when the hotel reception shrugged us off. I was very thankful.
I truly admire how respectful, and at the same time playful, you were with everyone on the trip. Again the example you set, had the effect of promoting respectfulness and playfulness amongst us all. You brought out the best in us. Jim, we had an absolutely fabulous trip. It was everything that we dreamed and more. What a truly amazing country, with wonderful people and great dancing. Thank you so much for making it possible.
Love,

Hey Magic Jim,
These videos are great!! I loved watching you with the kids. And the Kurdish dance/wedding. But Zembekiko Jim was the best!!
Carol
Hi Jim,
I am so glad you got the excitement of the Bride’s arrival at the Kurdish wedding on film, including the celebratory gunshots! But the video that made it all worthwhile for me was Magic Jim. Your doing magic tricks for those young Kurdish kids speaks volumes about why it is important that we keep doing these tours. When those young kids think about “Americans” in the future, at least one of the images that will pop into their head is the very positive image of us all laughing and having fun together. An incredibly important message.
Lee

Jim,
John and I had never been on a group tour before, but our experience of this trip was lovely and memorable (despite the weather)! Lee’s leadership of the group was exemplary. He was a great and gentle guide without being bossy. He was always reliable with his word and arrangements, and the itinerary he planned, worked to make our experience of Norway both educational and satisfying. He took great care of us, and the details of the trip in such a way that we could completely relax in his hands, and trust him deeply- the gifts indeed of a great leader.
I am very grateful for having had the experience.
Elaina Hyde-Mills
Jim,
Why a trip to Norway?
That’s easy to answer, to see the fjords. Yep, the fjords were on my list of travel destinations or in today’s lingo one of the items in my “bucket list”. Little did I know that when I put the fjords on my list, I would also have the opportunity to see rosemaling – Norweigan folk painting that I have been painting on and off for the last 6 years and have loved for many years before that. But that’s not all, as it was also a folk dance tour led by Lee Otterholt who spent 26 years dancing and living in Norway. And by the way, he choreographed the opening ceremony for the Olympics in Lillehammer, we were definitely in good hands.
So, in addition to learning about and seeing a gorgeous country, our trip was a triple treat for me: fjords, rosemaling and folk dancing with our folk dance friends, Enid Newman and Judy Boohar. The pictures (and we took plenty) between the four of us totaled 11 gig-a-byte and translates into over 3,000 pictures and videos. Needless to say, I have a wealth of pictures to sift through giving you a snapshot of our wonderful tour. It may take me awhile but additional volumes will follow. And now, sit back and enjoy.
When I started reading about Norway I was intrigued with Stave Churches. Most of these wooden churches were built during the Middle ages. During that time over 750 stave churches were built and only 28 remain today which is remarkable considering that this is year 2012. They obtained their name because the framework is built from timber which is so plentiful in Norway. Although there are several different styles they all have corner-posts (staves) and vertical planks standing on sills creating the walls. The decorations are a mixture of pre-christian Viking (dragons) and Christian designs. The walls/chairs were often painted (rose painting) and doors elaborately carved. To preserve the church from the weather elements, they were painted with black tar. This preservative creates a majestic sight next to the lush green landscape.
Heddal is the largest and dates back to 1250. It is triple-naved and surrounded by a covered ambulatory porch. The walls are painted with rosemaling (rose painting). Some of the churches have a small back door or window called a leprosy-door. Lepers were not allowed to come into the church but were allowed to receive a blessing/communion through this door. The surrounding tomb stones in the cemetery were interesting as they were often engraved with several generations.
Borgund is the best known and best preserved. It was dedicated in 1150 and has not been added to or rebuilt since. It too is a triple nave church. There are dragon heads on the gables and has the only free standing medieval bell tower still standing in Norway.
Over the mountains and through the valleys, off to Bergen we shall go to our final destination, Bergen. I simply can’t describe the landscape of Norway, she must be seen and when you see her, you will embrace the beauty and glory that she holds. Along the way, our first stop was to the Vemork hydroelecric power station at Rjukan. The plant first produced electricity to the saltpetre (fertilizer) factories and from 1929 hydrogen factories but a by-product of this process was “heavy water”. Ok, I was confused….I knew water could be clean/dirty etc. but how could 1 bucket of water be heavier than the other???. Well, heavy water (deuterium oxide) was needed as an ingredient of the atomic bomb. During the German occupation in World War II, the production plant was sabotaged by 4 Norwegians. Not an easy task when you see the terrain.
Next stop, Raulandsakademiet folk arts center where the classes are dedicated to preserving Norway’s traditional culture. It is situated in the small village of Rauland at the foot of the Rauland Mountains near the Hardanger plateau. Hardangervidda is the biggest mountain plateau in Europe and the home of Europe’s largest herd of wild reindeer. I want to be a student again!!!! as I would love to study a semester in Rosemaling (Norwegian folk painting). Here we were treated to a performance from the Hardanger fiddle (traditional stringed instrument like a violin but with 8 or 9 strings) musicians and dancers. Of course, I noticed that the fiddles were highly decorated with carved animals as part of the scroll and black ink decorations called ‘rosing’ on the body of the instrument. As an extra treat, we were invited to dance, good thing we paid attention at Karin’s!!!
Last but definitely not least, we had a prelude to the Fjords of Norway when we took a ferry across the Hardanger fjord, the sights will amaze you. Angel hugs Linda One of the pleasures of traveling is being eyewitness to one of nature’s magnificent creations. The waterfalls of Norway are majestic, they are powerful, and they are beautiful and definitely worth a “volume” for themselves. Another aspect of traveling I like is learning about the various folklores and legends that originate in the area, like the lock ness monster of Scotland, the yeti of Asia and abdominal snowman of the Himalayans. Norway is no exception. Huldra “is a stunningly beautiful, sometimes naked woman with long hair; though from behind she is hollow like an old tree trunk, and has an animal’s tail” and if you are not careful you will succomb to her charms and who knows what will happen to you!!!!!!. Our Huldra is the lady in red and Lee’s daughter spent the summer one year being a Huldra. What a summer job that would be and I bet she didn’t have to put up with 100+ temperatures either. Pour yourself a glass of wine or preferred beverage, think cool and refreshing while enjoying the marvelous splashes of water across Norway.

Dear Jim,
Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the tour in Bulgaria – it was absolutely fabulous! Thanks for all the work and planning you put into making it such a smooth and fun and varied trip.
Many thanks!
Carol Friedman.
Dear Jim,
Our trip to Bulgaria with you was one of the finest I have taken, and I have traveled in almost 60 countries. I have told everyone who has asked since I have returned home, It was a GREAT trip! We had a blast! Jim manages to get his fellow travelers “up close and personal” with the locals and plans surprises that are unique and fun. Every day was a new adventure. I’d go anywhere with you—can’t wait for the Poland trip! For those of you who bought my CD of the Copper Canyon and Bulgaria, let me say, “Thank you for all the kind words”.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for leading a most interesting and thought provoking trip. It was fun spending time with you. I realize it takes a most unusual person to happily lead such a tour – someone who really likes people and is willing to leap off into the great unknown. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone like you before but I’m glad I did now

Dear Jim
I want to tell you how much I enjoyed the trip and the way you led it. It was so well organized and you were superb in your attention and considerateness toward each group member, you ability to spontaneously capitalize on opportunities and your ability to bring the group together in such a delightful way. You set an example by enjoying us and what was happening around us and that provided a context for a beautiful two week ‘dance’ that included the folks in our group and the Turkish people that we met along the way.
I am still very much resonating to the aftermath of the experience as you mentioned that we would. I am enjoying telling friends and family so many stories about it and continue to reflect about the experience. It was and will continue to be richly rewarding in its aftermath for a long time.Warmest wishes and blessings,
Helen Griffen
Dear Jim,
I finally feel like I’ve landed after a week of circling. Got some pix back today…and my formerly fevered brain is beginning to make sense of the many wonderful images and memories of Turkey. Thanks for leading the trip, and balancing out all the personalities, energies, sights, sounds, information.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for sending me the lineup for next year’s folkdance trips.
We had a great trip to Poland, a great guide with excellent knowledge of the country’s history, good weather, small group, good hotels, gorgeous town squares and many impressive sights, esp. Krakow and Malbork. It was wonderful. Thank you for your help in the arrangements for the trip and also for connecting me with Sheila. She was a great companion with a great sense of humor. It worked out very well in that we both wanted to do the same things on our free time, whether exploring the town or playing ping pong. She’s a lot of fun. On the whole, the trip was unforgettable.

Dear Jim and Fellow Provata Counters,
What a tour indeed! How wonderful an experience! I enjoyed every moment of the journey. Greece is beyond my dreams and I know I will get back to re-visit some of the places we toured and the others we did not see this time. Thank you all for memorable hours we spent together. I enjoyed your camaraderie, dancing, singing and making friends.
Special thanks to Jim and Lee for putting together and bringing to life this journey, teaching and shepherding (Guys, this would not be possible without you two! I hope to join you on some of your future tours.); To Maroula for guiding us, adding a touch of Greek xenophilia to our tour and educating us on the wonders of her marvelous country (Maroula, we missed you a lot on the cruise!); To the musicians for creating our private orchestra as yet another dimension of the journey; To Dick for leading Serendipity Tours of Santorini for some of us. I hope our paths cross again soon.
Best regards,
Aida Bahtijarevic
Dear Jim,
Did that wonderful Greek trip really happen? Happily, we have the combined photos of all the “provata” to show that we were really there. When I first met the group at J.F.K., my impression was that these weren’t strangers at all, but instant friends, and that certainly proved to be the case. Then, the icing on this wonderful cake, was provided by the incomparable Maroula, who has to be the best on the planet at what she does. her beautiful voice, combined with her grand warmth, made for a perfect introduction into the cradle of Western Civilization.
Throughout the trip, you and Lee Otterholt worked tirelessly to see that we had the best trip possible, which I’m convinced, we did. You both provided us with wonderful teaching and delightful stories, not to mention handling seamlessly the many logistical issues that must pop up on tours like these. Thanks, guys!
This trip was a succession of wonderful memories, but three memories seem to want to step forward and be acknowledged as the defining memories of the trip, and they are: Dancing at night, on the hotel rooftop, which was lit only by the ambient glow of the Parthenon. Playing and “walking” at Epidaurus, especially seeing the line of ladies, coming down the steep coliseum steps, in a perfect exhibition of “stylized walking,” because, as you recall, dancing was not allowed.
On the last night, seeing the lights surrounding the Santorini caldera, from a cliff top cafe, with several cruise ships, looking like small, delicate toys, far below. Thanks to all of you, for making a lifetime dream of a trip to Greece, happen far better than anything I could have imagined! I hope that we can be together someday on a future trip.
All the best,
Patty McCollom
Dear Jim,
We had a lovely time in Santorini, resting up and walking, painting, and touring. The first day we took the bus to Oia, it was a beautiful day. Then Tom rented an ATV to tour the beaches. I took a swim in the crystal clear water and painted the scene. The roads were fairly empty and we had no trouble driving the machine. It was a trip to remember with fabulous sites, terrific folk dance leaders, a relaxed atmosphere, good company, and a gem of a tour guide. You really know how to plan a good trip. Thank you and have a wonderful season.
With love,

Chuck and Kaye Roth Hi, Jim, I so much enjoyed the trip, and did find it transformational in a number of ways! I read more of your book since I got back, and am inspired by your courage and willingness to explore the unknown…Hope I can do more of that with such lightness of spirit! I wrote a poem about the trip if you want to post it on your website. Thanks so much for creating an experience for all of us that was so incredibly rich in both beauty and human connection!

Another great trip with Jim Gold! Every day was an adventure with many memorable experiences. Bulgaria has a mysterious hold on me. I want to go back even though we have so many other countries to see.
There were so many great highlights and memories, including dancing in Koprivshtitsa in the evening with all the Bulgarians. We thank you again for opening our eyes to the wonders of Bulgaria.

Certainly your Bulgaria trip was full of surprises and wonderful moments! The spontaneity of the dancing was fantastic! You put together a great group and carried on a spirit of life and warmth throughout the trip. I particularly enjoyed the scenery (unexpectedly beautiful) and our visits to different cities. The people melded together very nicely and you deserve credit for that group leadership. I also thought the dancing was great and the trip really well done. Congratulations!

Jim,
What a gift I gave to myself by going to Greece with you. This was a dream of a lifetime and it was better than I had ever imagined. Your tour was the Way to go for me. I learned about the culture and fell in love with the country. Thank you for making this possible for me. I will be on future tours with you, and my husband will come too.

Dear Jim,
Our trip to Greece was the very best I have ever been on and I have been on quite a few.
To me seeing where the Delphic Sybille sat on her tripod and seeing the bellybutton of the ancient world thrilled me.
I enjoyed the monasteries on the rocks and in Patmos. And, of course, the food and the dancing!
I would tell anyone to tour with Jim Gold. In fact, I’d tell them they’d be crazy not to!
Fondly,
Fannie Salerno
Dear Jim,
Such a great trip to Greece! It gave us a chance to see Greece and Ephesus in all its glory, with the added dimension of local dancing. We had four Greek and Turkish dance workshops and several international dance sessions in hotels and on our cruise ship with Lee. We now know the difference between a Kalamatianos and an island Syrto.
We were so fortunate that the Pontic dancers came to our hotel to perform for us, thanks to you. We’re looking forward to your next trip!

Jim,
This was a fabulous trip. From the visit to the Acropolis in Athens to the last day in Santorini, we enjoyed beauty, history, dancing, and food.
The two monasteries we visited in Meteora were awe inspiring. All in all it was fabulous

Dear Jim,
Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the tour in Bulgaria – it was absolutely fabulous! Thanks for all the work and planning you put into making it such a smooth and fun and varied trip. By the way, all our connections worked out well in Prague (thought it was kind of a shock to be in such a big, crowded, touristy city after the magic of Bulgaria and all that wonderful music and dancing).
I’ll be writing up my dance notes this week, and checking music; let me know if you want to compare notes. And a reminder that, according to Vensi, you have the music for Ruchenitsa Boyanovska and the Reka from Dobraza that Krasi taught on the third album; I’d love to get a copy of that CD asap (so I have a chance to practice and the dances don’t fade from memory).
Many thanks!
Carol Friedman.

every minute. I bought a wonderful CD and have been listening to it to and

We really did enjoy the trip. It was one of the finest I have taken, and I have traveled in almost 60 countries. I have told everyone who has asked since I have returned home, “It was a GREAT trip!” Bulgaria is definitely not one of the prettiest countries I have been in, but the overall trip was one of the best.

I do not usually write recommending a tour company, but as a veteran traveler I am always looking for a new travel company….and I thought you might also. In case you are not familiar with Jim Gold International, let me tell you that I cannot recommend him and anything he leads highly enough. I traveled with Jim to Bulgaria last year and had the most fun on that trip that I have ever had in all my many years of travel. We “had a blast”! He manages to get his fellow travelers “up close and personal” with the locals and plans surprises that are unique and fun. Every day is fun and an adventure. I shall be leaving with him on his trip to Poland in early August and can hardly wait…..I’d go with him anywhere. If you can manage to get away, I hope to see you on that trip too. If you have never been, Jim is leading another tour to Bulgaria next year with Macedonia included as an extra goodie. You can check out his website at www.jimgold.com for his itineraries, dates, and prices. I highly recommend it.
For those of you who bought my CD of the Copper Canyon, let me say, “Thank you for all the kind words”. I appreciated the flattering reviews. Yes, it did represent a lot of work, but I enjoyed doing it and am glad you were pleased too. To those who have not purchased the CD, it is still available, and I would be happy to share my perspective of this interesting area with you through the lens of my camera.
Hope you have a good summer and many years of Happy Traveling,
Phyllis

Folk Dancing Testimonials
Dear Jim,
Read your Introduction, Dedication, About, Nature of Folk Dance and loved it. Especially like the title, A Step by Step Guide. (How appropriate.) I cannot begin to understand the dance steps, but I found the introductory information about each dance to be complete and informative. I think if I were a dancer I would just love the book. I am assuming that there will be video to go with this since I saw mention of a CD. I also think that anyone, even non-dancers, would enjoy viewing this “encyclopedia” of folk dance.
I cannot begin to imagine the work that has gone into this. I think you have a winner with folk dancers as well as dancers of all elks.
Thank you for sharing a glimpse of the mind-boggling work you have created and love. Few are so talented. What a great TV show this could make……It could even compete with “Dancing With the Stars”. Should you do that, let me know when it will air!
Have a good trip visiting with your family. I made reservations today to go down and visit Valerie for a few days the end of April. That, along with the June trip on the Silk Road, will perhaps give me something else to think about. Hope your Bulgaria trip will be successful. You work so hard; you deserve all the success imaginable.
Phyllis Fuller
Dear Jim,
Exciting and wonderful! Thank you. It reawakened my love of folk dancing!

Dear Jim,
Just a quick note to say thanks. Folk dancing with you was a perfect finale for a great day at Drew. The students, folks from the community, and I had a superb time as I knew we would. I rarely feel joyful at Drew, though I like my job very much. Dancing with you and the students was indeed joyful and therefore very special to me. Several students made it a point to tell me how much they enjoyed dancing with you.
I have thought for quite awhile that you have a rare gift—or set of gifts—that not only entertain and educate, but make people feel better and less self-conscious. Thanks for sharing your gift with us at Drew University.

Thoughts on peace while traveling in Greece
by Judy Morgan
Wandering through the sun-drenched remains of ancient civilizations,
So marked by beauty and exuberant intelligence
which was not yet enough to ensure survival,
I wonder…what of our survival?
Have we learned enough?
If we outstrip our resources, or our wisdom, as did other civilizations,
Will another Dark Ages loom,
of terror and superstition and bare survival?
Is this just our few centuries in the sun,
In the continuing cycle of civilizations thrown up
like vast ant hills that quickly rise and decline,
built by industrious and restless ants?
For what purpose is this restless drive to create?
And in the short few millennia of human history,
…only an eyeblink in evolutionary terms…
have we learned how to harness it
to prevent the decline to darkness?
I wonder…
Perhaps the restlessness is all to ensure a safe world
in which our children can thrive.
So that even as we slaughter our enemies, the goal
is safety for those we love.
Perhaps the drive is ultimately our heart’s deepest yearning –
To experience the fearless connection,
The oneness we knew in the womb.
To face and conquer all threats to that trustful connection to life.
So often we have used aggression and violence to create that security,
Have we learned enough
…to understand of our enemies
that they also seek safety for their children,
in their way?
…to see our interdependence with all the planet and
the imperative to love and protect the whole of it?
…to see that security in the long term lies in understanding
and not in dominance?
All core religious teachings call us to peace
And to the brother- and sisterhood of all.
Can we bring that dormant hope
Into tangible existence,
So that we can face the challenge of shrinking global resources,
And ever more powerful technologies of destruction,
With grace rather than violence?
Perhaps the spirits of all those who struggled over ten thousand years
to build worlds of beauty and harmony, as best they knew,
hoping to bring light to darkness, are waiting with us now,
to see…
